Khutbah Jumaat Masjid An-Nur, UTP

My dear brothers in Islam,

The tarbiyah of arRasul saw on the sahabah, tarbiyatul rasul, produce personalities this world has never seen and will never get to see again. These personalities were towering personalities – without whose tears, sweat and blood, we would never be Muslims today. They sacrificed their all, in upholding the deen of Allah swt. It was through this tarbiyah, from madrasatul rasul that produced the best amongst the creations of Allah swt. in the form of the sahabah radiallahu anhum ajmain.

When the Muslims captured Egypt and Amru ibn As ra was made the Governor, in his early years, he faced acute security problems along the borders of Egypt. He wrote to Amirul Mukminin Umar ibn Khattab ra asking Omar to send 8000 men from Madinah to help him handle the security problems along the borders of the newly captured territory. Omar ra sent him 4000 men.

Amrul ibn As ra wrote back to Umar ra and said, “You promised me 8000 men, but you only sent me 4000 men!” Omar ibn Khattab ra replied, “Amongst the 4000 that I sent you are 4 men who each of them, individually, accounted for 1000 men! Muhammad ibn Maslabah, Zubair ibn Awwam, Ubaidah ibn Samit and Miqdad ibn Aswad radiallahu anhum ajmain” These were the qualities of the sahabah who had undergone their tarbiyah under ar-Rasul saw. Do we see men today that count for a thousand?! Most men today don’t even add up to one!!

Remember Hanzalah ra?

Who entered the battlefield in Uhud a day after his marriage. He did not even have time to take his ghusul – compulsory bath – when the call for jihad came. When he was syahid, the ground in Uhud was bone-dry, but the area around his body was wet. Ar-Rasul s.a.w. said the malaikah had came down to bath him and have taken his soul into the high heavens!

Remember Mus’ab ibn Umair ra?

Before Islam, he was the wealthiest, before Islam, he was the most handsome man in Mekah. There was no person in Mekah who was better dressed than Musaib ibn Umair. He was the fashion icon in Mekah. He used to have perfumes that caused even the women folk of Mekah to envy him. When he embraced Islam, he donated everything of his wealth in the cause of those who were more in need.

When Mus’ab ibn Umair ra was shahid, also in Uhud, they search through his weath, they could not find anything to cover his body. All they could find was a piece of cloth to wrap him up in his qafan. When ar-Rasul saw pulled the cloth to cover his head end, his feet would show. When ar-Rasul s.a.w. pulled the cloth to cover his leg end, his head will show. Finally, ar-Rasul covered his head, whilst taking some leaves to cover his exposed feet. Ar-Rasul s.a.w. said “O Mus’ab, we could not find anything to cover your body and bury you. You donated everything for those who are in need. Al-Jannatul hiyal liqaq – In jannah is where we shall meet.”

Ar-Rasul told the sahabah not only human beings, even animals used to sacrifice for this deen of Allah. Ar-rasul s.a.w. narrated to the sahabah (radiallahum ajmain) that when Ibrahim as was thrown into the fire by Namrut laknatullah, there was a group of birds, small birds, that were frantically flying and fetching droplets of water from a nearby lake by means of their beaks and dropping these droplets of water into the fire in the hope of doucing off the fire and saving Ibrahim as. Ineffective it may be, insignificant it may be, irrelevant it may be, but these deeds by those birds were acknowledged by Allah and Rasul as deeds that contributed to enhancing and helping this deen of Allah swt.

Allah SWT says in the Quran:

"These were a nation who have passed away; for them is what they earned, and yours is what you earn; and you will not be questioned about their deeds."
[QS Al-Baqarah, 2:134].

These are people who have passed away before you. They will be rewarded for what they have earned and you will be rewarded for what you earn. And you will not be asked about what they use to do.
